This will be more of a blog about getting it up and running and not so much of a restoration to be honest... but I think its best put on here in the restorations (be it more electrical than cosmetic !!) .. I'll edit some posts, stick pictures up etc... Keeping this one at the top as a kind of Status.... Its a long way off yet....
Right..... Sorry if this goes to excess detail, but may prove useful... Dateline... 09/09/08 Cab - Aquired and unloaded 03/09/08 - Not too bad looking - Its been gutted and has been Jammatised with a World cup 90 Pcb, Scratchy old monitor, Torroidal Transformer , Jamma PSU, and another Transformer which comes from the monitor and then back again.... Missing the correct control panel and Marquee. The Plexi Glass has a few scratches on and Gloss white pain spots... Crack in the wood in one corner and a couple of bottom corners damaged/missing.... Cab is quite solid 6.5 out of 10 is a conservative score.
Ordered an uprated capacitor (£15 + vat, not bad for a new big blue equiv), Bridge rectifier, Cap Clamp and the connectors (molex 15 way and 3 way) and molex crimps from Farnell... Capacitor is 33000uF and not 27000uF, and is 40V instead of 16V ? - This should be fine for the application ( Saves going for a smaller modern equivalent and having to make up a metal plate to adapt it ) - Had to go for the higher voltage so the diameter matched the origonal !! Its starting to come together and take shape tonight, but I need to drill a couple of holes, extend some wires etc as some have been cut short.. Fitted the 3 way aux power out (and a spare) connector, Fitted the 15 way molex and have started to connect wiring up to it.... Fitted the Bridge Rectifier... Will probably solder to it, as I havent got any Flag connectors or suitable crimpers....The new capacitor clamp has a different 'footprint', one hole lines up, so I'll drill a hole for the extra fixing ear.. Fitted with one screw for now... Capactor fits nice and snug !! The big black one - I've written 09/2008 on the side... The other Atari cabs will be getting jealous...As most of theirs have xx/198x on them and even xx/197x !! ##edit## 10/09/08 - Made some major progress.... New Fuse Holders fitted (couldn't wait for the propper ones - make hay while the sun shines !!), and lots of wiring... Capacitor and clamp fitted properly...Had to move the aux power tabs (you can see these next to the bridge rectifier) near to the Capacitor (using one of the cap clamp fixing screws Next step... ARII.....
## EDIT ## 10/09/08 - 'TO DO NEXT' STATUS (This is to help keep me on track and remember what to do next more than anything !!) 2) Smoke Test the Power Brick - Check we have 10.6 V and that the other AC voltages are present - Done - 11/09/08 - need to test under load see (3) and (5) 3) Find a suitable ARII, hook up to the power brick using the loom and see if we get the right voltages out from the ARII !! - Done 12/09/08 4) Clean Cab and fit power brick to the base. 5) Temporaily fit the loom and PCB....Hook up a scope to the PCB XY outputs and see if it is alive..... Fix PCB if required.... (clock fault fixed - Pending fault with the vector generator) 7) Fit Monitor - Repair if required 8) Fit Control Panel and Marquee - Check the controls respond... Cab should be able to be played at this point... If not sort problems.... 9) Tidy up / Fix wiring in place / Sort Marquee lighing 10) Repair the split / Tidy up woodwork / Consider touching up the artwork.... Thats about it for now.... Cheers, Colin Edited by ColinD |

I'm trying to explain things in detail, rather than 'repaired the gutted power brick' - Hopefully it will come in useful to someone in the future and will certainly explain some basics on how to go about getting a cab project up and running.... (I'm also doing this 'just for fun' to see how much work is actually involved and to document it as I progress - otherwise I'll forget what I did 'at the time' ) So far, its pretty basic stuff, I'm just following the power brick schematics and comparing to what I actually had in front of me and what was missing.... It would be a major struggle if the info was not to hand.... Thankfully Atari Documentation is spot on with the details, although my modified brick won't conform to the wiring colours in the schematics.. but hopefully it will work ok fingers crossed Cheers, Colin Edited by ColinD |

Very pleased to hear that Col. The more detail (and pics!) the better! I am hoping that scopes will get involved at some point as so far i have not read too much about using them. Cheers Dave |

That's likely because they really don't get used all that much in this hobby
Mine gets used occasionally for tracking down audio problems (missing sounds sometimes), video sync problems, occasionally, and that's about all I ever use mine for. I guess you would also use it for trying to see problems with noise on a power line. Some people use them for more things of course, it's all down to personal preference but I have other tools that I much prefer for many other things
One thing we may see it used for here is in checking the output stages of the PCB in the fairly likely event of a video problem? |

I will resist the temptation to start quizzing you more on Colin's thread
![]() I actually have an Asteroids Cocktail that i started to fix (replaced Big Blue and a few diodes on the AR1 so far. This should be a helpful post for when i get around to phase 2. |

Mail me privately if you want - Asteroids can be difficult to diagnose
remotely for some of the problems though

Power Brick rebuilt and works on the bench with no load giving the correct voltages on the correct pins.... Found 3 no less ARII's (Atari Audio/Regulators) in the loft (will probably all be duff) and the game pcb..... will update shortly.... This bottom shot of the brick shows it is very happy with the work I have done... check out the bottom right of the above picture !!! Notice the odd fuse holder for F3... thats the 20A one... I soldered the wires to it just to be sure and remove a possible future source of problems, as I didn't want to use 1/4" crimps that could possibly fail at that kind of current draw... The maplin 30A? fuse holders still sound tasty though, but not checked them out yet.. but they look suspiciously like the ones I've used for the others..... Cheers, Colin Edited by ColinD |

The brick for my dig-dig.... the "big blue" has leaked and destroyed the wiring. I'm going to rebuild mine soon, have you got a uk source for the 15way output connector. (swallow or RS or someone problably have them but a part number or type would be handy
)

I did order a couple of spare 15 ways... You can have one and plenty of sockets/pins if you like... Should cover what I owe you / you owe me I found that if you dont use the right crimpers, the crimps tend to break off (or are a bit weak)... Luckily I have the propper removal tool, so once I had the right crimpers I made it good (with better wire too) without wasting good connectors... The crimps also have a bit of a flat on them which you can solder up, so if you don't have the right tools, its not as big issue... Learned a lot about these this week with Trial and Error !! If you are rebuilding, I can certainly recomend that you take the time to change/replace the fuse holders... You will probably need to move the aux power terminals too like I have... I'm also considering connecting the 0V/Gnd on the capacitor to the chassis/earth on the power brick.... It might prove a good idea if I want to add extra ground wiring and bond everything together... If you at least common the 0V's up with extra wiring (especially the monitor) It can save lots of problems aparently... like voltages drifting and floating around... The connectors/crimps aren't the best ever (Atari went for mass cheapness) so can lead to problems 25+ years down the line.... Cheers, Colin Edited by ColinD |

I can't find where you said where you got the 15way from in your first post. It's probably because my eyes are tired and its late.
![]() I dont bother with crimping them usually, I just solder them and then squish the tabs in with some pliers As luck would have it.... in the coin box of my missile command.... I have most things I need for a rebuild (bridge rectifier, proper fuseblock, fuses, all the spade terminals etc) I also have a box of "Big Black" capacitors, manufactured Jan 2008 so nice and fresh (I've got sooooo many atari cabs that need new caps - just getting the time to do everything) |

Thanks - Not the best, but it will do me fine.... Thats my kind of background / day job but I don't get to do so much nowdays, so enjoyed it.... Found some ARII's in the loft (3).... and tested them all out using a bench power supply during my lunch and stayed behind after work to repair one that had a dodgy regulator IC....Not checked the audio on them but the regulation was fine... ( used a couple of 6v lamps to load up the circuits). One thing I did find is that while adjusting the voltage output on the pot, the lamps dimmed / went brighter as I adjusted the voltage, but there was one or two places on the pot where tha lamps really glowed bright, thats not good if connected to a pcb and you were adjusting it, so replaced the 1k pot and its all sweet... must have been a dead spot on the pot.... I'll be sure to try this lamp trick again.... as It saves blowing up the pcb !!! Hooked the brick up to one of the ARII's using the loom and powered up the pcb for the first time tonight.... doesnt seem to be doing anything and I cant find my scope probes, so this is my first brick wall..... I cant get any test bleeps on the speaker, might be the ARII or the pcb... time will tell.... |

Good on you Col for taken the time in writing this thread. Nice and easy to comprehend for a a non techie like me. I have an old power brick for my sorry old Asty up right that needs a good overhaul. Reading this has sparked off my interest in getting on with the rebuild again. Tempest is a wicked game. Keep going with it mate. I'm sure she'll end up being a beaut of a cab when finished. Didn't Bob Roberts in the US carry the correct Big Blue cap and the Fuse holders once upon a time. Any one have any experience in ordering from him? I hear he has complete distain for Paypal? l

Yes, Bob roberts does repro big blues and also does the fuse holders.... He's shut due to the storm... I thought I would be better off doing 'uk sourced' stuff anyway ... hope that makes sence... Cheers, Col |

Bob has a good range of stuff, but offers no warranty at all on anything and also makes you send money orders..... which is expensive
